In LA, sushi is as much a part of life as sun, surf and Rodeo Drive. With restaurants seemingly on every corner, it can be a challenge to find the quality and ambiance you’re looking for. We’re here to help! Below, you’ll find our recommendations for what we think is some of the best sushi in LA.
Sugarfish is the place to go for sushi purists. Under the watchful eye of renowned sushi chef Kazunori Nozawa, only the purest of basic ingredients are used. Chef Nozawa doesn’t prepare “American-style” fancy rolls and fusion dishes. Known for his “Trust Me” style sushi, you can expect top quality fish, exquisite preparation and a superior dining experience at Sugarfish. Note that Sugarfish does not take reservations.
In the middle of frenetic downtown LA is the tranquil oasis of Q. With an air of near-reverence, you’ll find attentive, though reserved, staff and the soothing strains of classical music playing in the background. With over 25 years perfecting his skills after apprenticeship stints in both his native Tokyo and Honolulu, Chef Hiroyuki Naruke has now brought his perfectly precise method of sushi preparation to LA.

Though Michelin is no longer distributing stars, Mori Sushi was honored to receive one in 2008. They have worked hard to stay worthy of that most distinctive honor and many agree that they have succeeded. A uniquely spare interior, oddly reminiscent of an art gallery, greets diners as they enter the space on West Pico Blvd. in LA.
As the restaurant that actually started the global Nobu dynasty, Matsuhisa is a must-visit on every sushi-lovers bucket list. It is perennially alive with the excitement and the energy of its LA surroundings and the quality of the food is consistent with Nobu’s well-deserved reputation for excellence. Be sure to try the rock shrimp tempura and a bottle of sake.
